Whenever people are killing each other on the battlefield, other people:

1. Join the fight.
2. Stop and watch.
3. Take sides.
4. Place bets.
5. Cash in on the action in other ways.
6. Try to outdo one another screaming, yelling, and cursing.

As for myself, I:

1. Write a novel.
2. Paint a series.
3. Knit something unusual.

The results of my efforts seem to last longer and might even outlive all of us.

Besides, I have always believed that battlefield fighters can very well fight for themselves. It's part of their job description, and it's what they are paid to do.
